ROMP Lab
Random Oscillating Magnetic Pendulum
1. Gather your spiral and a pencil.
2. Take your items out of the bag.
3. Write the Title ROMP on the top line. Date your lab.
4. Skip a line. Write DIAGRAM and label the parts.
5. Draw a diagram of ROMP. Label the parts.
6. Begin placing the magnets around the base.
7. Draw your placements and draw what happens with the pendulum.
8. Write about what happens.
9. Flip the magnets over. What happens? Draw and write about results.
10. Repeat steps #6-#9 several times by trying a different magnet layout.
11. Why do you think the movement changes?
12. What does ROMP demonstrate?
13. Look at the diagram below. The center blue rectangle is a magnet. Pretend that is the magnet on the pendulum. Predict what would happen.
